Is Dean An Alpha?

What do we know about the Alphas?

Samuel’s been hunting them for a while, locking them up, interrogating them and presumably handing them over to Crowley. Sam was at least aware that the Alphas were being targeted and captured, but says he didn’t know more.

Crowley wants the Alphas because they know the location of Purgatory, which is where the souls of supernatural beings go, although his endgame is not clear. Hell nothing about Crowley is clear, and I highly doubt he was responsible for the resurrections as he claims. (For the record I think Crowley may be in cahoots with some rogue angel/s)

Crowley seems to have made a deal with Samuel. But what about Sam? I think there was a couple of big hints that he has done a deal , although I again not sure who with, or for what.

We first had a possible nod to this in Weekend At Bobby’s when Dean threatens to burn Crowley’s bones and Sam emphatically says “A deal’s a deal”, and this weeks we had the reiteration that deals tend to be dodgy (for the 327th time in Supernatural).

Anyway, finally to my theory. This arose out of thinking about a question many fans were asking – why is Sam keen to have Dean around, given he doesn’t care about him *stifles sob*?

Plausibly its because he recognizes that Dean is a good hunter and brings skills – like empathy – to the game that Sam no longer has. But what if Dean is a valuable commodity…

This week Dean got abducted specifically because he was a first born son. The Alphas are all first borns (and all sons so far).

Sam: But if you’re the first, who made you?
Alpha Vampire: Well, we all have our mothers. Even me.

We know there is something important about the boys bloodline, chosen vessels yadda yadda.

So maybe Dean is an Alpha something and Sam knows this?? Maybe Dean is a valuable commodity Sam has been told needs to protect. Or he wants to trade Dean…

What I do know is it’s wonderful to have such an intriguing mytharc this season.

The next new episode for Supernatural airs on December 3rd.

I wonder if there is such a thing as an Alpha Human. In theory, that would be Adam. Assuming Supernatural actually follows the whole Adam and Eve story. I would assume they probably do since they’ve already mentioned Sam and Dean being decedents of Cane and Able.

I also wonder if all Alphas are immortal. If they are, then an Alpha Human would be in theory too, even if immortality isn’t a human characteristic. Maybe it would just be reincarnated every time it dies? Which would mean it couldn’t be Sam or Dean since they’ve both died more times than I care to count.

Also, if Dean was an Alpha Human (or Alpha anything) he probably wouldn’t have been able to be changed into a vampire. So I don’t know.

Hmm, that’s a novel concept. While I doubt that Dean is actually an ‘alpha’, it is entirely possible that he has some innate…connection to something more. And now on top of everything else, Dean can see fairies. Which is just funny.

And the suggestion that Sam would trade Dean for something else is a good point. Thought presumably not for a soda.

Alpha Male. In the sence that every guywants to be Dean. But Monster Alpha no. Its a pretty farfetched idea.

  4. lindz1994 says:

Hmmm… I don’t know what to think of that theory. It is a little too out there, even for supernatural. There is something definitely going on with their bloodline, though.

I love your blog and your theories. Keep up the good work! :)

It stands to reason that the Alpha concecpt would be used in novel ways in Supernatural. however, the Alpha’s status as the ‘original monster’ illuminates its function: it is the source for the monsters powers and the blood line of that particular creature. so supernatural phenomenon that do not fit this mold: tulpas, angels, ghosts, demons would not have Alphas, because tulpas are thoughtforms, angels are creations of the Supernatual cannon conception of a creator deity, same for demons except with lucifer, ghosts are essentially spirits, and so have no source; they’re too general. of course there are some inbetweens like the reapers, presuambly their Alpha is the Horseman of Death, but still no cannon on how reapers become reapers. still, though Dean, as alluded to in other posts may have some universal purpose or status. dynamic question, this blog is great. never even would have thought of Alpha humans etc. keep it up!

If anything I’d think that soulless!Sam qualified as an alpha. I mean clearly the alpha vampire established he certainly isn’t just human anymore. Now I don’t see how he could breed more of him unless soullessness could be genetically inherited, but all the same as it seems that there aren’t other soulless!humans wandering around Sam qualifies as an alpha in his own right.
As for the whole Dean Alpha business regardless of the strange bloodline business, I think he is still just human.
Even if either one of them was an alpha tho, the only reason Crowley valued them was for their knowledge of purgatory so its not like the boys could’ve helped him out in that department anyway.

I know this is a little far fetched but im really hoping that it doesn’t end up that dean and sam are somehow in the bloodline of jesus. and i think that cass is going to playing a bigger part in everything that he has been letting up, i mean he has been resurrected like 3 times now

  9. LuciferRising666777 says:

This doesn’t have much if anything to do with Dean being an Alpha but it does have to do with Him being important… well, Him and Sam. The Alpha theory is intriguing but in regards to the last episode, “Appointment In Sammara” we have to ask ourselves something about Sam and Dean’s Souls. They have been resurrected more than three times each which means they are more than just a couple of lucky you know whats. The Universe and The Entire Balance of Everything and Beyond That has a Order or Balance within the already existing balance. It’s like a giant program that goes in the way its suppose to and also goes in a indirect un-guided way which can lead to cosmic transmuations or in other words Sam and Dean’s Souls are on a scale that bypasses the normal stature of a human soul. They both have been to Hell and back not to mention that Sam may have gone through more torture than Dean did with “Michael and Lucy hate banging his soul” in the words of Balthazar; also that His soul was in Lucifer’s Cage for an entire year if not over. Dean resided in Hell for four months, one of those months he served in Hell which is on its own torture to the soul. This along with the fact that they have been touched by supernatural beings (Dean=Angel(s) and Sam=Demon(s)) while being resurrected on an unnatural but universally important scale it would be no foolish idea to say that Their Souls are rare commodities in maybe more than one way. Also by the way we can’t forgot to add that the fact that They are the decendants of Cain and Abel to this equation.

I dont know for sure but they got something up their sleeve and we wont find out til the season finale

  11. supernaturalfangurl says:

That’s a really good theory. There’s so much they’re going to explore this season. They have yet to talk about Chuck. As well as in the last episode when Dean requested a letter be sent to Ben if anything were to happen to him. I can’t wait to see where this season is going, they’re leaving us in the dark!

  12. RO says:

The only thing I could think is Dean is an Alpha Vessel since he was suppose to be Michael’s vessel. *shrugs*

  13. Nick says:

I, personally, don’t think Dean is any kind of Alpha, but I do believe that he maybe has some sort of bloodline link to the whole story in season 6. But in terms of the purgatory stuff, i think Kali might be coming back. We saw her near the end of season 5, in the episode “Hammer of the Gods.” She is rescued by the Winchesters, at the request of Gabriel, and sorta disappears. However, if you look at the stuff regarding the actual history of the figure Kali she is commonly referred to as, “The Dark Mother,” after the alpha vamp made that comment about “we all have our mothers,” it makes you wonder if she maybe has some sort of connection. At the very least, she could be connected to the vamps because if you notice her style usually revolves around blood somehow. If you ask me, theres probably gonna be some badass god like kali, or maybe kali herself, that is considered the legit first that probably created all the monster alphas.

  14. Richard says:

It’s an intersting idea, especaily what is said about the possiblity that Dean is reincarnated, but that would mean that eventually Dean will get memories from his past lifes. Which also means that dean will know the location of Purgatory.
It’s a good idea but thats all really is, i don’t think you could grow much on it..

  15. Hillcane Indy says:

I dont think Dean is a alpha. Cause of all the times he die plus the vamp thing. I do though think there is a Alpha Human….. My Thoughts it could be Adam or Eve maybe there sons Cane and Able maybe even Christ but then again in some religians believe that Jesus and the Archangel Michael are the same that Jesus is just Michael in Human form

  16. Hillcane Indy says:

What do you think would be a Human Alpha Powers or Abilities be ?
My Thoughts are that the alpha may have Mentality/Psychic based abilities such as Superhuman tracking , Empathy , Mental projection and Omni-linguism since a average human uses only 10 % to 20 % of there brain just guessing that maybe alpha would use 50% to a 100% of there brain at one single moment. They may also have and again Im guessing… Personal physical powers such as Superhuman strength , Superhuman reflexes and Reactive adaptation/evolution

  17. Mary Dorio Khan says:

Wow, there is a lot of speculation here, I love it! Well, we know that immortal means you cannot die, but what if (because they all ready did) that they or Dean alone, was made immortal AFTER he died the last time (last time..LOL) I mean that immortality is a gift. It could possibly be bestowed on a soul as compensation or reward if you will. Perhaps, if the mythology of the show tells us that Death itself is older than God, what if Death is the bestower of it to Dean. It appears that death respects Dean to some degree and brought forth Sam’s soul even when Dean forfeited the challenge that Death gave him. And ofcourse there is the fact that he trusted Dean enough to give him his ring last season to free him from Lucifer’s spell. More food for thought and YES, there is something big in their bloodline, because even Cupid knew that there was gossip in the heavens over the Winchester/Campbell union and the fruit of that union. So it has to be more than vessel choices, and I do believe that it will impact the remainder of this season and likely be fodder for the next season to come.

  18. Asher Rose says:

Dean could be an Alpha…something, but we don’t know just yet. The writers are keeping it under wraps.

Then again, Dean is a beast at everything he does.

  19. Kev says:

He could be becoming the Alpha Hunter, one bloodline goes back to Adam and Eve, the other is full of hunters, throw in all the stuff he’s been subjected to, it’s reasonable to assume his destiny was never to become Michael’s vessel, but to become man’s protector from God’s other creations

  20. amandabila says:

I’ve never had thought of that, but it seems plausible, at leat that’s what I think. And it would give a huge turn up on the season 6 plot. Even it doesn’t happen, it’s fascinating how theories can be brought on Supernatural’s mithology, that’s one of the things I most love about this show.

  21. Nick says:

He is not an alpha, alphas go to purgatory. Every time Dean dies he goes straight to heaven, except for the one time he went to Hell; remember when Ash said, “You two die more than anybody I know,” and said that Sam and Dean had been there many times before but couldn’t remember cause their “brains were windexed” as Ash puts it. That means that Dean has been going to Heaven each time he dies, and therefore cannot be an alpha. But the fact remains, Dean goes to Heaven and each Alpha that has been confronted so far says they WILL go straight to Purgatory when they die. But, I do think that Death has plans for Dean, especially after the interest he took in Sam at Dean’s request in “Appointment in Samara.”
